At Black Monk Wines, we are passionate about crafting wines that reflect the unique character of our land and the artistry of our winemaking. We are proud and excited to present to our customers the exceptional wines of Campo de Borja Denominación de Origen (D.O.), where the unique terroir and rich winemaking tradition come together to create a truly remarkable wines.

D.O. Campo de Borja, located in the heart of the Aragón region in northeastern Spain, is a land of exceptional natural beauty and a rich winemaking tradition. Known as the “Empire of Garnacha”, it is renowned for its unique terroir, where the combination of the high-altitude climate, fertile soils, and the influence of both the River Ebro and the Sistema Ibérico mountains creates the perfect conditions for growing the Grenache grape. This hardy, expressive grape thrives in the region, producing wines that are rich in character, full-bodied, and complex.

The landscape of D.O. Campo de Borja is marked by diverse terroirs, with vineyards planted at altitudes ranging from 450 to 700 meters. The varied microclimates, along with the interplay of heat and cooling winds, allow for the development of wines with deep fruit flavors, balanced acidity, and elegant tannins. We carefully harvest grapes from 40-year-old Grenache vines to produce wines that reflect the unique essence of this historic region.

Grenache wines from D.O. Campo de Borja are renowned for their intense aromas of ripe red berries, hints of spice, and subtle floral notes, developing layers of complexity with oak aging. The grape’s natural resilience to heat and wind allows it to flourish in this rugged landscape, producing wines that beautifully reflect the region’s bold yet elegant style.

The grapes for our wines are harvested from vineyards located on iron-rich clay soils with a large amount of gravel, which provide moderate drainage and force the vines to dig deep for nutrients. The reddish hue of these soils comes from oxidized iron, which contributes to the intensity of color in the wine, as well as a distinct mineral complexity. Clay retains essential moisture during hot summer months, allowing vines to thrive even in the arid climate of D.O. Campo de Borja. While clay can hold water, the presence of gravel and limestone fragments within the soil helps maintain a balanced drainage system, preventing excess water retention.

These soils, combined with the region’s hot days and cool nights, allow Grenache to develop its full potential, resulting in wines that are both powerful and expressive, yet beautifully balanced.
